The Pokémon World Championships 2026 wrapped up in San Francisco on August 30th, and the closing ceremony delivered a lot more than just new champions. The Pokémon Company used the stage for a string of concrete announcements that went well beyond vague teasers: a release date, six new Mega Evolutions, a full new card series, and even a new animated film.
The competitive game Pokémon Champions now has a confirmed launch date: September 9, 2026. The release brings three new Mega Evolutions straight into competitive play — Mega Lucario Z, Mega Absol Z, and Mega Garchomp Z — alongside playable newcomers Rillaboom and Baxcalibur; details on Mega Heatran are still to come. The Pokémon TCG is getting its own boost with a new "ex" card series: Mega Lucario Z ex, Sigilyph ex, Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zygarde ex, Mega Greninja ex, and Mega Rayquaza ex — all six were shown with finished artwork, not just names on a slide. For collectors and tournament players, that distinction matters: "ex" cards are typically a set's strongest, priciest, and most-traded cards, so naming six of them sets the tone for next season's meta before a single pack has even shipped.
There was plenty outside the competitive scene too. Pokémon GO battles are getting a third charged-attack slot, usable across every Go Battle League tier, Armored Mewtwo is confirmed to return, and Mega Raids kicked off in San Francisco right after the ceremony. Over in Pokémon Unite, the Eeveelution roster is finally getting completed: Morpeko arrives September 4th, Toxtricity September 24th, and Jolteon and Flareon follow in October. Mobile players aren't left out either — Pokémon TCG Pocket is getting new dual-type cards and more Basic "ex" cards in October, and more Pokémon LEGO sets were confirmed for 2027. Looking further ahead, the 2027 World Championships are heading to the Singapore EXPO, August 13-15 — the first time Worlds has been held in Asia since Japan in 2023. And the big screen isn't being left out: "Pokémon: Wild Card," a new animated film following a TCG-playing protagonist and their Mimikyu, was also announced.
Mega Evolutions Over Real-Time Combat?
The sheer number of fresh Mega Evolutions looks like a deliberate short-term call. While Game Freak's 2027 titles Pokémon Wind and Pokémon Welle appear to be testing a move away from classic turn-based battling, Pokémon Champions is doing the opposite in just two weeks — doubling down on Mega Evolutions inside the system players already know, not reinventing it. That reads less like two competing visions and more like a safety net: the established system gets fed fresh Mega Stones right now, while the riskier real-time experiment gets another full year of development before it has to face the wider fanbase.
For the competitive scene and TCG collectors, the closing ceremony's report card is clearly positive — a firm date, clearly named Mega Evolutions with finished art, and a full new card series are concrete announcements, not vague promises for "someday." The verdict is more cautious for anyone hoping for a bigger structural shake-up: the genuinely interesting experiment — a possible break from turn-based combat with Pokémon Wind and Welle — stays on hold until 2027. Until then, Pokémon Champions is keeping the competitive community busy with familiar mechanics and new faces, while GO and Unite players get smaller but concrete updates of their own.
